Discussing with a friend that they are being an asshole is a tough thing to do and the only thing that I can think to compare it to was the bad breath of the woman standing over me during my commute today. You don’t want to embarrass the person by saying anything, but you don’t want to smell stank-ass breath either.
So this friend has progressively been behaving more and more like a total bitch and while I have rarely been the victim of it, many of my friends have. She’s rude to satellite friends, friends of friends and close friends. Basically, she is becoming more of a frenemy.
Whenever confronted with her bad behavior she takes it as a personal assault and attacks whoever suggested it, playing the victim. Normally, that can make one doubt themselves but when all of my friends tell me they would rather not be around her, then I can’t be having delusions.
Either way, it finally reached a point where I had to say something, so I sent her a private email pointing out that her behavior might be alienating her from her friends. Unfortunately, she blew it way out of proportion, despite my trying to talk to her discreetly and in a friendly manner.
There is little that you can do when a person is unwilling to consider that they may in fact be the one at fault. I tried but in the end can’t have some one who behaves like that in my life.
